Albion v Reading

4 January 2014

Report: Albion 1 Reading 0

Albion booked their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup following a comprehensive 1-0 victory over Championship rivals Reading.

Andrew Crofts scored the only goal of the game, a driven first-half effort, as Oscar Garcia handed full debuts to Solly March and Adam Chicksen.

Dominating proceedings from the first whistle, Albion could have been three up with less than half an hour played.

Keith Andrews was first to go close, his long-range effort looping off Reading’s Jake Taylor and forcing keeper Adam Federici into a sprawling save.

Seconds later, he hit the bar with a first-time shot as the visitors failed to clear their lines.

Man-of-the-Match March was next to hit the woodwork with a rasping drive before the rebound fell kindly to Ashley Barnes, whose follow-up effort also hit the bar with Federici beaten.

The deadlock was finally broken on 32 minutes when Crofts’ driven effort found its way past a stranded Federici.

Albion continued to press and Kemy Agustien was unlucky not to finish off a superb solo effort after rounding the Reading back-line.

Minutes into the second half Peter Brezovan saved well as Reading started brightly before March almost made it 2-0 with a low drive that Federici could only palm out for a corner.

Seconds later, the Reading keeper was called into action once more as he palmed Agustien’s goal-bound effort away from danger before Lewis Dunk, on for Gordon Greer, headed narrowly wide from a corner.

Reading grew into the game late on, with Taylor going close at the death, but it was too late for the visitors as Albion secured a deserved victory.
