REPORT: ALBION 0 SHEFF WED 1
Sami Hyypia’s first game in charge ended in defeat, as Brighton & Hove Albion went down 1-0 to Sheffield Wednesday at the Amex.
Giles Coke’s superb first-time curling effort in the 40th minute was the difference between the two sides in an otherwise fairly even encounter.
The Seagulls, however, played most of the second half with ten men after Andrew Crofts was dismissed for a tackle on 50 minutes that referee James Linington adjudged to be dangerous play.
New signing Chris O’Grady was lively throughout the game and the debutant was involved in Albion’s first real chance of the game.
He cleverly intercepted the ball in midfield and found Kazenga LuaLua but the winger's shot was saved by another debutant, Keiren Westwood, in Wednesday’s goal.
O’Grady also headed Jake Forster-Caskey’s corner over the bar and academy graduate Shamir Fenelon saw his effort saved by Westwood.
Wednesday took the lead against the run of play, five minutes before the break, when Coke curled an effort past David Stockdale after good work from the dangerous Jacques Maghoma on the wing.
On the stroke of half-time LuaLua almost equalised but he drilled his effort just wide of the post.
On the hour mark new signing Aaron Hughes showed his experience in the heart of Albion’s defence when he covered well to deny Atdhe Nuhiu any space to shoot.
The complexion of the game changed when Crofts was sent off for a foul on Sam Hutchison early in the second half.
The dismissal fired Albion and O’Grady almost levelled on 69 minutes, but Westwood denied the striker his dream start with an excellent fingertip save.
Albion began to press for an equaliser and full-back Inigo Calderon delivered a teasing ball right across the six-yard box, but the visitors defended well to clear the danger.
Hyypia brought on Mackail-Smith with 15 minutes to play, and switched to three at the back as his side went in search of an equaliser - but Wednesday held firm to prevail.
