Ayrsome Park was the scene of Albion’s most crushing defeat as they were ripped apart 9-0 by a rampant Middlesbrough side during the 1958/59 campaign...
The day was supposed to be one of triumph as Albion made a 38-year-old dream a reality by being in the Second Division.
Then manager, Billy Lane, had led Brighton to the Division Three (South) Championship in the 1957/58 campaign and with a new central section in the West Stand at the Goldstone up and ready for the new season, Albion were seemingly on the up.
Yet the dream soon became an extraordinary nightmare. Lane had made minimal changes to the squad that had won the Division Three title as he was keen to give the championship-winning players a chance to prove themselves on the higher stage.
At half-time the picture looked ominous enough as Lane’s side were 5-0 down and the famous Brian Clough was the man who inflicted the most pain on Brighton, as the forward grabbed a brilliant five-goal haul in the demolition of Albion.
Clough was the scourge of Lane’s men in the 58/59 campaign as he guided Boro to the double over Albion as they smashed another six goals past the Seagulls at the Goldstone in a 6-4 triumph, with Clough netting a hat-trick.
