Zak Emmerson fired in a brace as Albion reached the quarter-finals of the Under-17 Premier League Cup.

Albion reached the quarter-finals of the Under-17 Premier League Cup with a 4-2 win over Crystal Palace on Tuesday.

Only needing a draw from their final group match after overcoming Millwall and West Ham, Albion made it a hat-trick of victories as they reached the last eight of the competition.

Mark Beard's youngsters took the lead when the Palace keeper couldn't hold Marcus Ifill's shot and Matt Everitt followed up to fire home.

Everitt doubled the lead when he rounded off a fantastic counter-attack, converting at the back-stick from a cross from the right.

The young forward turned provider when his defence-splitting pass found Zak Emmerson, and he rolled the ball into the bottom right corner.

Matt Everitt netted twice, as well as assisting the third goal.

Emmerson rounded off the scoring for the afternoon when Albion attacked from a Palace corner, with the former Oldham Athletic man finding the bottom left corner with a smart low drive.

Beard said, “It's been a really good competition, we had a tough draw for the group stages.

“Palace beat us just before Christmas so we knew what they were like – they're very good going forward. We slightly adjusted how we played, we didn't press quite as high.

“As the game went on it became a bit more frantic as they pushed for a way back into the game. But now we are two games away from a final.

“I said to the players that this is why we do it, we want to try and get to finals and win trophies. They can play with no fear, we have a fantastic team.”

The under-18s are next in action this Saturday, as they face Fulham in league action.

“We lost 3-1 to them in our second game of the season. We had a player sent off after 25 minutes. We went 1-0 up they equalised, and then scored from two late set-pieces.

“The result wasn't a fair reflection of the 90 minutes, but Fulham are a top team who are up there in the league at the moment.”
