Adam El Abd enjoys Albion going in front against Southampton.

With Albion set to face Wolverhampton Wanderers tomorrow to kick off the new year on the south coast, we've taken a flick through the archive to relive some of Albion's best New Year results from the past decade.

Albion 5-0 Leyton Orient – 1st January 2011

By Paul Hazlewood
A celebration Albion supporters certainly became used to, as Glenn Murray nets a hat-trick against Leyton Orient.

The line-up: Ankergren, Greer, El-Abd, Painter, Taricco (Kishishev 64), Bennett, Sparrow, Dicker, Bridcutt, Murray (Holroyd 69), Wood (Barnes 55).

Goalscorers: Murray (3), Jones (own goal), Barnes

Albion's last New Year's Day match at Withdean a decade ago got 2011 off to a great start.

With the Seagulls topping League One heading into 2011, an Orient side struggling to put distance between themselves and the relegation zone were the visitors.

After the O's tried to frustrate Gus Poyet's team early on, Glenn Murray found the breakthrough just before the half-hour mark.

Chris Wood saw his effort palmed into the back of the net by visiting keeper Jamie Jones before Murray grabbed two early on in the second half to put the game beyond doubt and secure his hat-trick.

Ashley Barnes was introduced and found a fifth to round off the scoring, while Albion's dominance was such that the hat-trick hero was able to be substituted with 20 minutes still to play.

Albion 3-0 Southampton – 2nd January 2012

Jake Forster-Caskey celebrates his first senior goal, after opening the scoring against Southampton.

The line-up: Brezovan, Cook, El Abd, Greer, Bridcutt, Taricco (Hall 54), Forster-Caskey, Sparrow, Buckley, LuaLua (Harley 85), Mackail-Smith.

Goalscorers: Forster-Caskey, Sparrow (2)

A Saints side leading the Championship arrived at the Amex full of confidence, with a certain Adam Lallana starting for Southampton that afternoon.

The current Albion midfielder thought he'd given the visitors the lead as his strike from just inside the box appeared to cross the line, but Steve Cook's goal-line clearance kept Albion in the game heading into the break.

An off-the-ball incident between Rickie Lambert and Adam El Abd saw the Saints striker given his marching orders early in the second half and it would prove to be the turning point.

Kazenga LuaLua's long range strike was spilled by Kelvin Davis and Jake Forster-Caskey mopped up for his first goal in professional football. Cue pandemonium among a 20,000 strong Amex crowd.

Matt Sparrow fancied getting in on the action and he did so with aplomb, finding the back of the net with an outstanding strike from 25 yards. Davis didn't have a hope.

The midfielder's second of the afternoon didn’t quite catch the eye as much as his first, but it brought an emphatic end to a run of four defeats without a goal.

Ipswich Town 0-3 Albion – 1st January 2013

Wayne Bridge's strike was the pick of the goals on New Year's Day at Portman Road in 2013.

The line-up: Kuszczak, El Abd, Greer, Bridcutt, Bridge, Lopez, Hammond, (Orlandi 80), LuaLua (Dicker 55), Barnes, Mackail-Smith (Dobbie 85).

Goalscorers: Hammond, Mackail-Smith, Bridge

The Tractor Boys were full of confidence when Albion made the trip to Portman Road in 2013 with five wins in seven putting the wind in their sails.

But after Dean Hammond, back at Albion for a second spell on loan from Southampton, grabbed the opener when he nodded in after 15 minutes for his second of that season, Albion didn't looked back.

Craig Mackail-Smith got on the end of Ashley Barnes’ pass 20 minutes later to make it 2-0. One of 11 goals he got that campaign before rupturing his Achilles tendon.

The New Year's Day rout was finished off by Wayne Bridge who fired in emphatically. The result spurred Albion on and they finished the campaign with just three more league defeats that season.

Fulham 1-2 Albion – 2nd January 2017

The line-up: Stockdale, Bruno, Duffy, Dunk, Bong, Knockaert (Murphy 79), Stephens, Norwood, Skalak (March 66), Murray, Baldock (Hemed 70).

Goalscorer: Hemed (P), Dunk

A result that put Albion top of the Championship after an eventful evening at Craven Cottage.

David Stockdale was Albion's saviour early on when he dived to his right to keep out Stefan Johansen's penalty after handball by Bruno.

The Cottagers weren't to be denied and found their goal ten minutes after the restart as Lucas Piazon smartly found the bottom right corner.

Tomer Hemed was bundled over in the box and the former Israel international was certainly not in two minds as he delicately rolled the ball into the bottom left corner with expert precision to level from the penalty spot.

Then a minute later and Lewis Dunk rounded off a move he started, winning the ball just inside the Fulham half. Although Anthony Knockaert was denied by Button, the Albion captain was on hand to nod in and give his side a crucial victory.

Albion 1-1 Chelsea – 1st January 2020

The line-up: Ryan, Montoya, Webster, Dunk, Burn (Bernardo 22), Propper, Alzate, Bissouma (Connolly 45), Mooy (Jahanbakhsh 68), Maupay, Trossard.

Goalscorer: Jahanbakhsh

Cesar Azpiliqueta gave the visitors the lead after ten minutes when he converted from close range after Albion failed to clear a corner.

Tammy Abraham would be denied by a smart Adam Webster block before Leandro Trossard’s curling effort was kept out by Kepa Arrizabalaga, with the Spaniard denying Aaron Connolly shortly before Alireza Jahanbakhsh scored arguably Albion's best goal of their Premier League era so far.

When a corner was nodded in the Iranian's direction he pulled off an outrageous bicycle kick which found the bottom left corner.

Neal Maupay went close to nabbing all three points but Albion fans got more than their money’s worth that day with Jahanbakhsh's acrobatic brilliance.
