Albion's win at Villa Park was their second of the Premier League campaign.

Graham Potter praised his side as Albion won at Villa Park for the first time.

Goals from Danny Welbeck and Solly March sealed a 2-1 win over Aston Villa, Albion's first at Villa Park and their first over Villa since 1980.

They had some fortune in stoppage time when referee Michael Oliver changed his mind following a VAR check after awarding the home side a penalty.

Potter said, “We haven't won for a while so of course the result was important for us. We had to suffer, you need a bit of luck in the Premier League and we survived a moment with the penalty decision at the end.

Potter: An important win

“We had so many moments where we played really, really well. As you would expect with the firepower that Aston Villa have you are going to have to suffer and defend and I thought we did that well, apart from their goal.

“But then we showed great character to come back and score a really good goal from open play. To get three points in the Premier League you have to do everything well and I thought we did that.”

Welbeck’s strike marked his first in Albion colours and continued an incredible run of form for the striker against Villa, against whom he has scored nine goals in nine games.

“Danny has had to run a long way and it's a fantastic finish. It's so composed because the defenders are tracking back and the goalkeeper is coming out. I am delighted for him, he's been a breath of fresh air since he arrived here. He seems to enjoy his football and that's important for us.”

March's finish for his second of the season to make it 2-1 was just as emphatic.

“It was a good goal. Solly seemed to take an age to get his right foot around the ball but it's a great finish. We are trying to get Solly into those positions more.

“I am pleased for him because we missed him when he came off against Tottenham and it’s nice for him to contribute to the win.”

The game wasn't without it's controversy as Villa saw a penalty decision overturned after Trezeguet appeared to be brought down by March in second half stoppage time, moments after Tariq Lamptey had been sent off.

Potter added, “My initial feeling at the time was it wasn't a penalty, I thought there was a touch from Solly and their player made a bit of it. We have had four go against us this season and sometimes you're not sure what is a penalty and what isn't, it's in the lap of the Gods.”
