Neal Maupay hailed a ‘top performance’ by his team-mates after Albion eased to a 3-0 win at Newcastle United to claim their first Premier League win of the season.

After missing his last two penalties, the Frenchman put Albion ahead from the spot after Tariq Lamptey was fouled before scoring his second in the seventh minute.

Aaron Connolly wrapped up victory late in the second half, and not even the late dismissal of Yves Bissouma could put a dampener on a victory which extended Albion’s unbeaten run against Newcastle to seven games.

Maupay said, “We took a lot from the Chelsea game even though we lost and today we were on top of our game from the start, I thought it was a top performance.

“We put pressure on them straight away, got two goals and then I thought we had good control of the match.

Asked about his two early goals Maupay added, “For the penalty, I have missed my last two, so I had to score and I’m glad to have put it in the net.

"For the second I was sure I was onside, even after they checked it I was confident it would be given. It was a goal – I’ll take it!”

Lamptey produced another eye-catching performance before coming off after 57 minutes.

“He is amazing,” said Maupay. “He’s been superb every day in games and training and everyone in the squad loves him because he’s such a nice kid. He defends well, is so quick and has got quality on the ball.”
