Graham Potter praised the attitude of his squad after they comfortably saw off League One Portsmouth to reach the third round of the Carabao Cup this evening.
Alexis Mac Allister, Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Bernardo and Viktor Gyokeres grabbed the goals as Albion put four past Kenny Jackett’s side without reply.
Potter said, “I thought the application and the attitude of the players was really good. Portsmouth came and competed and made a real game of it – the first half was quite close so our attitude had to be good but we played some really nice football.
“We hit the post, had a couple of chances cleared off the line and scored a good goal. Then we started the second half well and got the goals that killed the game off.
“We go to Preston next week and it’ll be a tough game up there. We will play Newcastle at the weekend and then we can focus on Preston.”
Jahanbakhsh’s strike was the pick of the bunch as he smashed an effort in from the edge of the box early in the second half.
“Alireza’s goal was a fantastic strike,” Potter added, “We have seen him do that – when he hits them, they stay hit, it was almost going faster and faster as it hit the net.
“There’s not many tap-ins so we could do with him getting a few more tap-ins! Bur he has always got that ability to hit the ball like he does and I am really pleased for him.”
