Albion have asked Everton’s 11-year-old Fan of the Year Lewis Docherty and his family to be their guests of honour when the teams meet once supporters are safe to return to the Amex.

Lewis Docherty won the Everton Fan of the Year award.

Lewis, who has quadriplegic cerebral palsy, received more than 1,000 nominations for Everton’s award in recognition of both his fundraising efforts and devotion to the club, with fellow supporters citing his “amazing personality” and unstinting commitment despite several hospital stays in recent years.

The emotional video of Lewis receiving his prize, featuring a surprise guest appearance from Everton captain Seamus Coleman, captured the imagination of Albion’s chief executive and deputy chairman Paul Barber.

Barber said, “Watching the video, young Lewis is clearly a very worthy and popular winner of Everton’s Fan of the Year award.

“We hope fans are able to attend matches again next season and it seemed like a nice way to reward Lewis by inviting him and his family down to Everton’s game at the Amex as a special guest of the club.

“Everton, like Brighton & Hove Albion, share very strong and vitally close connections with their community, via their community scheme. We are two clubs who connect closely with our fans.”

Lewis’ mum, Traci, added: “Lewis has been overwhelmed by the fantastic response he has received from Evertonians and supporters of all football clubs after being announced as Fan of the Year.

“He loves Everton and you can see how much it meant to him to be given the award, and the support he has received since has been brilliant.

“We are hugely grateful to Paul Barber and Brighton & Hove Albion for their invitation and we look forward to spending a great day with them when we are able to.”
