Megan Walsh believe that the the attacking options Albion have brought in this campaign add a lot to the squad.

Megan Walsh believes that a shift in mentality will play a massive part as Albion aim for a successful 2020/21 campaign in the Women’s Super League.

Having finished ninth in the top-tier last season, the Seagulls are hoping to build on that having seen big improvement towards the end of the campaign before it ended prematurely due to Covid-19.

Walsh said, “We had a mentality shift and you could see that towards the end of last season just before the enforced Covid-19 lockdown. We were working a lot more effectively as a team and if we conceded we took it in our stride a lot better instead of letting heads drop, because we knew we were good enough to get back in games.

“As a team we really want to kick on again. We did well last season and could have finished higher, but we were just a little bit inconsistent. There were games we should have put to bed but we didn’t and were then punished – Tottenham games and West Ham are the games that come to mind.”

The former Yeovil Town stopper was speaking after a week-long training camp at St George’s Park, which culminated in a friendly against Leicester City which 2-2.

“It’s been a really good week – the training facilities at St George’s Park are fantastic,” said Walsh. “We’ve had time to really hone in on the fitness side of things as well as the tactical. We’ve now had the opportunity to work with the new players and get a feel for what they’re about.

Megan Walsh warms up ahead of a pre-season match against Leicester City.

“The new signings are really good additions. They are mainly attacking ones and they really boost the competitive edge in the squad. But it also helps me and the other goalkeepers, because they’re all trying to score past me in training, so in turn it makes us better.

“Katie Startup is a good goalkeeper, an excellent person to work with, but she fits really well into the group and has got good banter!

“We also got to see Lee Geum-min play for the first time and she adds a different element to the team – she isn’t necessarily full of tricks, but she gets past players and links up really well with the rest of the players. I am really impressed.”
