Lallana: Let’s build a winning mentality

Self-belief is key to getting results against the top six, says midfielder.

Adam Lallana believes Albion can compete with the top sides in the Premier League.

New signing Adam Lallana thinks that tweaking their mentality can help Albion pick up more points against the top six.

The Seagulls defeated Tottenham and drew with Chelsea at home and Leicester away, but lost their other nine fixtures against the top six in the Premier League this season.

Lallana said, “A lot of it is about having belief and confidence in your own ability. I have seen Brighton play and I have obviously followed them very closely post lockdown and they have had some fantastic results.

“They played well against Liverpool and on a different day they might have got a result. It might just be about tweaking the mentality of the players and believing that you can beat the top six teams.

“It’s fine margins at this level as the lads will know. The boss hasn’t been here long either so he is creating an infrastructure and an environment he wants the players to thrive in. I hope I can contribute to that.”

The former Southampton and Liverpool man is an 'excellent role model' according to boss Graham Potter.

The 32-year-old has a huge amount of experience to fall back on, not just during his time with Liverpool and England but also Southampton, where he won back-to-back promotions from League One to the top tier at the start of his career.

“I am fortunate that, over the course of my career and especially in the last six years, to go to major international championships, play in European and domestic finals and win the Premier League and Champions League,” he added.

“There’s a lot of experience that I have been fortunate to gather and if I can help to nurture and improve the  younger lads I would really like to do that.

“There is some fantastic young talent here and the boss has given them a chance. It’s a perfect club for young players to thrive and with the balance of the experienced and younger players I think you can get great success.”
