Chief executive Paul Barber said, “This is a really positive step by the Premier League and one we welcome, as it now gives the players and clubs additional support in bringing some of this mindless abuse to the attention of the social media companies, and where necessary the police.

“As a club we will always take this sort of abuse very seriously, and where appropriate will ensure that the police are made aware. We will also support them in taking appropriate action against any individual responsible for posting any form of abuse on social media platforms or by direct messages to our players.

“For our part, we have long since had a zero tolerance approach to discrimination of any kind, and we have continually made clear we do not want these type of individuals, regardless of which team they support, or to be associated with our sport in anyway.”
