Barber outlines next steps ahead of possible return to action

Albion's chief executive updates on Project Restart.

Chief executive Paul Barber has outlined the next steps Albion and other clubs will be taking ahead of a possible resumption of Premier League action.

At the last meeting of Premier League shareholders earlier this week it has emerged that a significant majority of clubs indicated that they preferred to play home games at their own stadiums, and talks between the Premier League, Government, police and relevant safety authorities on this point are ongoing.

On Wednesday discussions involving all managers and club captains also took place to outline how the staged return to full training would be managed and the medical protocols involved. If these are agreed at a further meeting of clubs next Monday training involving small groups may start as early as Tuesday.

Asked firstly about the meetings which involved managers and club captains, Barber said: “We need to reflect on what was said (in each of the meetings) and to hear back from the Premier League on some of the questions we've raised as a club that we needed clarification on.

“Then we can discuss that with Graham Potter, his staff, the players and also with our directors because it's important the board sign off on the protocol because ultimately the liability sits with us (as a club and as directors).

“It was important the players heard directly from the League and the Government’s medical advisors on what they're being asked to sign up to. But each player will have their own family situations and their own concerns which is why we want to take a bit of time to make sure we understand everyone's views in the squad.”

Asked about playing their remaining home games at the Amex, Barber said he was pleased that avoiding neutral venues if it was at all possible had the support not just of Albion but the majority of clubs.

Potter and Barber press conference

“We were heartened by the outcome,” he said. “We want to trust our fans and work with our local authority and our police in a positive way and we feel that, from a sporting point of view, for us to finish our games at our own venues is the right thing and I hope the Government will support us on that.

“We’ve been very supportive all the way through this crisis and done whatever we can as a club to help the authorities, the police and the NHS.

“I hope we would be trusted to put our own games on. I would trust our fans to listen to the messages but any individuals that didn’t respond positively to requests to stay away would face whatever sanctions are necessary.

“Let’s hope we get to a positive outcome for everybody.”
