Robbo, as he was affectionately known, joined the Albion from Manchester City in July 1980 for £400,000 and was an instant hit – scoring 22 league and cup goals in his first season.
His impressive form warranted a first call-up to the Republic of Ireland squad that October and he would go on to win 13 caps while at the Goldstone.
Michael will be fondly remembered by Albion fans for his displays during the 1983 FA Cup run, scoring three goals on the way to Wembley, including the winner in the semi-final against Sheffield Wednesday at Highbury.
Following the Seagulls’ relegation, Robinson was transferred to Liverpool, winning League Championship, European Cup and League Cup medals, before seeing out his career in England with Queens Park Rangers.
In January 1987 he left the UK to join Spanish side Osasuna and so began a new chapter in his life. A knee injury curtailed his playing days and he began an extremely successful career as a television sports presenter.
Indeed, the former Albion number nine quickly developed into a huge star in Spain, with his integrity and fluency of the language endearing him to viewers in his adopted country.
