Steven & Rachel Bishop

When was your first game? What was the score? What can you remember about the game

Lincoln City 2-1 Albion in 1998. I think it was the first season after we left the Goldstone. I was about 6 years old and living in Lincolnshire at the time and my dad came up from Sussex to take me to it. My Albion love affair started then!

Who was your first Albion idol?

Gary Hart – still is! So much so that as a child my mum told me I used to walk like him!

What is your favourite Albion game and why?

Albion v Sheffield Wednesday, play-off semi-final second leg in 2016.

A slightly odd one but many Albion fans will empathise, I’m sure. We had missed out on promotion on goal difference to Middlesborough at the Riverside on the last day of the season - somewhat unjustly many would say. After that heartbreak, we had four injuries during the first leg at Hillsborough and ended up running out of substitutes, finishing the game with ten men and remarkably coming away only 2-0 down.

I left work at 3pm in Coventry and on the train to Falmer the news came in that Anthony Knockaert was miraculously fit to play and you could feel the fans starting to believe we might turn the tie around. The atmosphere in the first 20 minutes is something that I have never, ever experienced before. It was wall to wall noise as our injury-depleted team bombarded Wednesday.

Somehow the ball would just not go in then about 16 minutes in Lewis Dunk scored and the Amex erupted. I hugged a man next to me I'd never met before, a bloke behind me was standing on his chair going wild. We were one goal away from leveling the tie and for a few minutes we believed. Sadly, Wednesday scored about ten minutes later and, though we huffed and puffed, we couldn't do it.

A boy next to me was in tears at the full-time whistle and his father was consoling him. I'd never been so proud of the team, yet so utterly dejected at the same time. I can smile about it now only because the best was to come the following year. The cauldron of noise that day and our togetherness as fans makes it my favourite game.

Which season stands out as your favourite?

2016/17, promotion season to the Premier League. Plus it was the year I also met and got married to my wife, so it’s extra special to me!

Which are your favourite Albion home and away shirts?

British Caledonian shirt from the early 1980s, Skint home and away shirts (red and black stripes) and the home shirt during our first season at the Amex.

What is your all-time Albion XI?

Withdean squad during the Division 3 Zamora era. Bobby, Gary, Chippy, Charlie, Michel, the Ginger Prince etc – what a team!
