Three and easy does it for Balogun

Leon Balogun picked up his third win and clean sheet in as many matches as Wigan Athletic beat high-flying West Brom in the Championship on Saturday.

The Nigerian defender was part of the Latics team that claimed a 1-0 victory at the Hawthorns. Wigan are now unbeaten in all five games that Balogun has featured in and have climbed to 19th in the table. 

Ben White also kept a clean sheet in a big win for Leeds United in the same division as the Whites picked up a 4-0 victory away to Hull City, while Jayson Molumby and Millwall drew 1-1 at home to play-off rivals Bristol City at the Den. Goalkeeper Christian Walton and Blackburn Rovers drew 2-2 at home to Swansea City. 

Elsewhere in England’s second tier, Matt Clarke and Derby County were 3-1 winners over Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough and host Manchester United in the Emirates FA Cup on Thursday at Pride Park.

In League One, Robert Sanchez and Rochdale were on the wrong end of a 3-0 defeat to Portsmouth at Fratton Park on Friday.

In Germany, Leo Ostigard and Viktor Gyokeres helped FC St Pauli to a 3-1 home victory over VfL Osnabruck. Ostigard played the whole game while Gyokeres was a second-half substitute in a win that moved the side up to 10th in Germany’s second tier. 

Percy Tau and Club Brugge were 2-1 winners away to Genk in the Belgian Pro League and hold a 12-point lead at the top of the table, while in Holland, George Cox helped Fortuna Sittard to a clean sheet in their 0-0 draw away to VVV Venlo. 

In Turkey, Florin Andone was a second-half substitute in Galatasary’s 3-0 victory over Genclerbirligi SK. 

Bojan Radulovic played the final seven minutes of Deportivo Alaves B’s 3-2 home win over Real Sociedad B in the Spanish Segunda B Group 2, and Kasper Lopata helped Zaglebie Sosnowiec to a 2-0 win over Miedz Legnica in Poland’s second tier. 

Striker Jurgen Locadia notched his first goal for FC Cinncinatti in their 3-2 loss away to New York Red Bulls on the opening day of the new MLS season. 

In non-league, Carl Rushworth and Worthing drew 1-1 at home to Potters Bar at Woodside Road. The result keeps the Rebels seven points clear at the top of the Isthmian Premier League.
