The Albion manager was left to rue the call to send Lea Le Garrec off for two bookable offences in the first half, but conceded that second-half penalty awarded to Spurs which ultimately won the game was probably the correct decision.

She said, “I don’t want to criticise the referee, but some of the decisions on both sides were questionable. It ruined the game in a way and it's difficult to take.

“I’m not quite sure why Lea was sent off. She was upset and didn’t want to let the team down. It’s really hard when you’re playing against 11 with only 10 players.

“But I must say that we played better when we went down to 10 players. I thought we were quite poor in the first 15-20 minutes and weren’t at the races.

“After Lea was sent off we started to play a bit better. Was it a penalty? It probably was. Overall though it was a disappointing day.”

Powell praised her side for the response they showed after the break and their endeavour in trying to salvage something from the game.

“When we went down to 10 players, the performance was a real positive for us. But before that, I thought we were poor," she added.

“I said that at half-time, but we dug in and I thought we got better as the game went on.

“It’s really difficult when you’re a player down, but we did everything possible to try and get something out of the game.”
