The 28-year-old played the full 90 minutes against the United States as England won 3-0 at Wembley, having also been named in the squad for UEFA Nations League matches against Spain and Croatia in October earlier that year.

He said, “I have obviously experienced playing for England, so it’s a great honour to receive the cap – it symbolises the achievement. I am going to display it in my house, it’s a nice treasure to have.

“It’s something to show my kids when they grow up, they were at the game, but they’re too young to remember it. It’ll be to show the grandkids as well! Not many people get the opportunity to represent their country and I was lucky enough to do that.

“Hopefully I can get many more appearances for them, I will keep playing my game at Brighton and I hope I will get picked again, but you can’t take the one I have away from me.

“I have got to make sure I perform well for the club, getting picked for England is out of my hands. I have got to show on a Saturday that I am good enough for a spot in the squad. Hopefully if I keep going until the end of the season, you never know what will happen.”

The Big Interview: Lewis Dunk

Reflecting on the appearance, the Albion skipper was somewhat apologetic for his rendition of the national anthem but spoke of his pride at representing his country.

“The standout memory is probably singing the national anthem. Before the game against the United States I had only sung it in bars and pubs on holiday watching the World Cup and Euros with my friends,” he continued.

“It is a real moment to be standing there in the line-up singing it with Three Lions on your chest. I have dreamt about it since I was a little kid. Singing it was incredible and a moment I will savour for the rest of my life.

“I just hope nobody heard me singing, I am terrible! But it’s a great honour to represent the country.”
