Aileen Whelan’s fifth goal of the season stretched Albion’s unbeaten run to three games in the 1-1 draw and Barton felt they should have collected all three points.

She said, “A draw against fourth place is a pretty good result, but we probably deserved more than one point.

“Equalising just before half-time gave us a boost and in the second half we showed a lot of character and togetherness. Aileen is our goal machine at the moment. She really threw herself at the ball for the goal and deserved it.”

Albion looked the more threatening side after the break but Barton admitted they missed some good opportunities.

She added, “Not taking our chances is something we’ve struggled with all season – we could have a lot more points if we’d been more clinical in front of goal, but the good thing is we are creating more now and if we keep working hard the goals will come.”

While Barton took the player of the match honours, 17-year-old Maya Le Tissier caught the eye with another composed performance in defence.

“Maya is incredible for her age,” said Barton. “She is so strong and solid, you wouldn’t think she is a teenager the way she plays. She is a credit to herself and it’s brilliant to be along side her.”
