An own goal from Adrian Marriapa 12 minutes from time earnt the Seagulls a deserved share of the spoils with the Hornets, and the Albion boss was full of praise for the effort of his men.

He said, “I thought we did well across the game, and we got punished in the first half for one error.

“It’s a great strike but we were well in the game – we kept pushing forward but that’s not so easy when they defend deep and people behind the ball.

“We pinned them back in the second half and I was delighted with the spirit we showed again. Coming from behind isn’t easy but I thought we did really well.”

Potter: We Deserved To Get Back In It

The trio of Steven Alzate, Neal Maupay and Alireza Jahanbakhsh were all introduced after the break as the Seagulls searched for a route back into the contest with Nigel Pearson’s men.

Potter was satisfied with the impact the three had on the game, and stressed the importance of continuing to take the campaign one match at a time.

“We had good attacks and lots of bodies in the box, but creating chances isn’t always so easy to do," he added. “We made some attacking changes after the break, and I’m delighted we got something out of the match.

“The lads are open-minded and adaptable, and they understand what we’re trying to do, their effort got them something from the contest.

“We don’t look up or down the table, it’s about the next game. We have a break now before Sheffield United and we’ll recover between now and then."
