Two fans arrested: one for assault on steward, one for letting off flare

Brighton & Hove Albion are set to issue indefinite bans to a number of individuals after a series of incidents of anti-social behaviour at yesterday’s match against Aston Villa.

A fan was arrested and charged by Sussex Police after assaulting a club steward, while another supporter has been charged for letting off a flare in the away end. Both men are due to appear at Brighton Magistrates Court on 6th February.

Meanwhile, two individuals in the away end have been identified for separate alleged offences — one involved the throwing of a flare and the other throwing an object at opposing fans — with Sussex Police investigating them.

Chief executive and deputy chairman Paul Barber commented, “Yet again we are dealing with reports of totally unacceptable behaviour from a very small minority. They’ll now face the courts and very lengthy, if not indefinite, bans from the club.

“In the case of the individual who has been charged with assaulting a member of our stewarding staff, they can expect an indefinite ban from all Albion matches, on top of what the courts may deem appropriate.

“We’ve made it clear many times that abuse of, or assaults on, the club’s staff will lead to very severe punishments, regardless of possible action from the courts. Any assault on a member of staff is absolutely disgraceful.”

The female steward received medical attention for minor injuries.

Police are also investigating a reported assault on a man just outside the stadium as he was leaving after the match, in which he received cuts and bruises. No arrests have been made at this stage.

Sussex Police football liaison officer PC Darren Balkham said, “We worked in close co-operation with the club and safety stewards to ensure these isolated incidents were safely and effectively dealt with and enquiries are continuing where necessary.

“They didn't reflect the superb support from over 99% of fans from both clubs."
