The shortlist was decided by the Premier League’s Football Development Panel after PL2 club coaches nominated the best performance by an opposing player in their December league matches.

The Swedish midfielder found the back of the net against both Wolves and Arsenal during the final month of the calendar year with two impressive strikes.

The first came in a 1-1 draw at Compton Park in the Midlands, as Gwargis rifled home to earn Albion a share of the spoils, before he also netted a stylish winner in a 1-0 win over Arsenal on the south coast a week later.

The 19-year-old has also made his senior debut this season, providing an assist for Haydon Roberts in the Carabao Cup tie against Aston Villa at the Amex back in September.

Gwargis is up against the Derby County duo of Louie Sibley and Morgan Whittaker, Leicester City’s Admiral Muskwe, Manchester United’s Tahith Chong and Middlesbrough’s Isaiah Jones.

The winner is due to be announced on Friday after being decided by the Football Development Panel.
