Umotong even hungrier for goals

Ini Umotong says that getting off the mark in the FA Women’s Super League has made her even hungrier to score goals, as the team prepares to take on Tottenham Hotspur at The Hive on Sunday.

The Nigeria international scored her first FAWSL goal of the season in the 2-2 draw against Reading last time out, and she highlighted how rewarding it is to score at the highest level.

She said, “Scoring in that game has spurred me on even more. Now I’ve got the ball rolling, I know I can do it, and I want to do it even more.

“It feels like gold dust to score at this level, so when it does happen, I can’t describe the feeling. The defenders are getting quicker, stronger and bigger, which makes it harder to find the time to get a shot off and score a goal.

“It’s also always better to score if we’ve won the game or claimed a point, because it makes it that much more meaningful.”

Umotong looked in more detail at Sunday’s game, and with Spurs sitting two places and four points above the Seagulls in the table, the forward is eager to overtake the north Londoners in the table.

“Tottenham can’t be underestimated, but we have so much confidence following our draw against Reading and how we performed in that game.

“Looking at Tottenham, they had a midweek game and drew with Birmingham. Hopefully that would’ve knocked them back a bit and give us an opportunity to get at them.

“I’d love to overtake them in the table. That’s not me underestimating them in any way, but I feel we have the confidence and talent to do that.”

The forward also spoke about how standards have raised within the squad, and how having a gruelling pre-season schedule has been crucial to their progress this season.

“This pre-season has been the toughest pre-season that any of us have had, and it made us feeling fitter and stronger coming into the season.

“Our individual programmes are more tailed and specific, and it’s all about getting the basic things right to give us a competitive edge.

“It’s down to the smallest details, whether that’s nutrition or knowing every detail of your opponent. I feel like we’ve grown up a lot this season.”
