Despite falling two goals behind early on, the defender, who scored his second goal of the season to make it 2-1, says that the way in which Graham Potter’s men almost got something out of the match gives the Seagulls plenty of positives to take forward.

He said, “We never gave up and never let them settle, but the start of the match is what cost us.

“It’s frustrating. For the first 15 minutes I didn’t think we were at our best, but then we dominated the rest of the game and were the better side.

“To come to Anfield and leave frustrated speaks volumes but we have to move on.

“We showed great character to get back into the contest and then control it. We had more possession – we just couldn’t find that equaliser. We have to look at each other and think how well we’ve done.”

Two headers by Virgil van Dijk ultimately proved to be the difference, but Potter’s men enjoyed more possession than their hosts and created chances throughout the 90 minutes.

“It shows we can come to the big teams and more than compete,” the captain added.

“At times we passed it excellently and we were outstanding, but we have to do that from the start. if we can take the chances we create then we’ll be a really tough side to play.

“We have to learn from the start. We were too passive and the goals we conceded weren’t like us. But we have to take the positives from the other 75 minutes when we were in control.”

Potter: We gave a good account of ourselves

Dunk showed quick thinking for Albion's goal, sending a free-kick into the far corner of the net and past Adrian moments after the Spanish keeper had replaced Allison, who was sent off for handling outside the penalty area.

“I had three good chances, I took one with the free-kick which was nice but the other two are ones where I know I can do better,” he admitted.

“I looked at the referee and made sure he was happy for me to take the free kick and he was so I just aimed for that far corner.

“I saw the keeper taking a while to line the wall up and went for it. I’ve been practicing free-kicks in training, not ones like those admittedly, but it was a bit of quick thinking that obviously came off.”
