Albion’s French striker was sent tumbling in the box after a challenge by Ricardo, but referee Mike Dean indicated the Leicester defender played the ball, and a VAR check didn’t overturn Dean’s decision.

However, Maupay felt he was impeded and Albion should have been awarded a spot kick – and with the score 1-0 at the time, it could have offered them a route back into the game.

When asked by reporters if he felt it was a penalty, Maupay was emphatic, “Definitely. I need to watch the replay again, but I thought it was a penalty because he tripped me from behind.

“I didn’t go down by myself, but that’s life. It’s not down to that, that we lost. We now need to move on, as we’ve got another tough one on Saturday.”

Meanwhile Maupay paid tribute to the Foxes, after Brendan Rodgers's side gave Albion their toughest game of the season at the Amex, as the Foxes cemented their second-place position in the Premier League ahead of this evening’s match between Manchester City at Chelsea.

“We knew that they were a really good team, especially this season. They have good quality players, but actually I thought we played well in the second half.

“We did what we wanted to do, but unfortunately, they scored their first goal on the counter attack, from our corner, and that was unfortunate.

“At that stage we felt we were putting them under pressure. That’s why we are all so disappointed; we thought we were going to score and we had a corner, we were pushing, we had some chances, but they hit us on the counter attack.

“We kept pushing after that, but unfortunately it was from another counter attack that they got a penalty. Playing against a very good team like Leicester, you know if you make one or two mistakes, it’s too much, they will punish you and score goals.”
