Gross reflects on a positive start

Pascal Gross says the team can be satisfied with their haul of 15 points from their opening 12 games of the season, and explained that now is the time to refresh ahead of a gruelling run of fixtures.

Albion face the Premier League’s current top two sides in Leicester City and Liverpool when they return after the international break, and the German feels they are heading into this double header in a good place.

He said, “We could’ve had some more points after performing well in a number of games so far this season, but we have to be quite pleased with what we’ve got already.

“We weren’t great in our last match against Manchester United, but to go into this international break with 15 points already under our belts gives us something very positive to build on.

“But we know there’s a tough period afterwards, and we have to be ready for that.”

The midfielder reflected in more detail on the United match last Saturday, and admitted that the side deserved to leave the north west empty-handed.

“We didn’t show our best football, like we did in the past few weeks. In order to take points away from Old Trafford, you need to be on your 'A' game, but we weren’t and that’s why we didn’t get anything.

“I was brought on to influence the game, get into offensive areas, and try to play my game. We brought it back to 2-1, but we left ourselves a bit too open afterwards and they deserved to win the game.”

Christmas cracker at the Amex!

Leicester will provide a stern test for the squad next Saturday, but Gross believes that these types of games are ones where Albion can pull off unexpected results.

“They have everything going in their favour at the moment. They have a strong defence, and very good footballers that play with pace and score goals. I would say that they are a very complete team.

“They have some very fast, intelligent attacking players like [Jamie] Vardy and [James] Maddison, who are performing very well at the moment and have been key to their recent success.

“But I feel that we surprise people where people don’t expect us to pick up points. We know how strong we are at the Amex, and we’ll look to do everything we possibly can to get a result.”
