Maty Ryan has praised the way that the goalkeepers at the football club have taken on the new challenge of playing out from the back under Graham Potter so far this season.

The Australian international spoke about the effect that the rule changes for the new campaign have had on the side’s philosophy, and they have coincided with the impact of head coach Potter following his arrival on the south coast in the summer.

He said, “You’ve seen with the rule changes that the centre-backs are dropping deep and we are now playing short - the manager gives us the freedom to play what we see, but we try to fall back on that foundation of trying to get set up in the right position.

"Once I’ve played that first pass the challenge is to try and find that solution and execute it with the composure that’s needed. We try to find avenues to get out, and with every opposition we face each week, it changes, because they have different tactics in how they want to shut us down.

"We do our best to work hard and find solutions and ultimately play a brand of football that gives us the best chance to get the win."

Ryan went on to speak about the increasing involvement of the trio of himself, David Button and Jason Steele in first team training and their possession drills, highlighting the benefits it has had on all three of their abilities.

“The goalkeepers joining in with the outfield sessions is a common thing, the manager gets us all involved in the passing drills and the rondos, we like to call them. Some weeks we’re doing at least one possession drill every day with the team,” he continued.

“You play with one goalkeeper that’s standing at one end of the box and play through the thirds to get to the other goalkeeper, so it’s a common theme and it’s helped myself and the other goalkeepers be composed on the ball. It helps us to execute the passes on game day.

“I think it’s an asset that’s only going to help you as a goalkeeper. We work hard on that aspect. If you ask the coaching staff, they would be full of praise for us goalkeepers, we have immersed ourselves into it and tried to adapt and work hard at getting better.

"We’re trying to improve with that every day and set high standards, I think you have seen that already this season.”

Christmas cracker at the Amex!

Head coach Potter recently praised the goalkeeping department at the football club, hailing the attitude and application of all of his staff since his arrival on the south coast.

“What I liked about Maty was his personality and his determination to be the best he can be, they’re two very good qualities to have, and he’s open-minded as well,” the boss said.

“He’s ready to try and work at things, they were what stood out to me. When you have that you know you have a chance to progress, but I would say the same about David Button and Jason Steele, those three have all been great. They’ve all contributed to what we’ve done, as well as Ben Roberts and Casper Ankergren in the coaching department.

“All three of the current goalkeepers are comfortable and have indicated that they want that challenge, Maty’s CV over the course of his career shows that he’s been at clubs that use that style. He can make saves and keep the ball out of the net too so he can do both sides. They all work hard every day and I suppose Maty represents that. I’ve been pleased with them all and I’m sure we can improve together.”
