Maupay remaining grounded after Norwich win

Neal Maupay is encouraging his teammates to remain grounded following back-to-back wins in the Premier League, and says their eighth-place position counts for little at this stage of the season.

The Frenchman highlighted the topsy-turvy nature of the Premier League, and believes the number of points they have accumulated is what counts rather than their league position.

He said, “I never look at the table, as it’s too early, but we are just trying to build something here at Brighton with new players and a new manager.

“We are just trying to be better as a team. Obviously eighth is really good, but the season is long and we need to improve.

“We need to keep working, because we were 16th before the last two results when we lost at Villa. It can change really quickly so we have to stay focused, and if we do that, then we’ll be fine.”

Maupay spoke in more detail about Saturday’s win over Norwich City, and felt the team upped their intensity after the break.

“We played against a really good team, so it wasn’t easy at all. We struggled a bit to control the game at first, and they were doing well, but then we changed our shape and we played much better in the second half.

“Overall, we played better football, had the better movement and created more chances. It’s a good win for us and we need to keep working. We need to look at what we did well and what we didn’t do so well, and then see how we can improve.”

The 23-year-old was unable to add to his tally of four goals on Saturday, but highlighted the need for players from all over the pitch to contribute at the attacking end of the pitch.

“I am a striker, and I want to score. I need to watch the replays, but sometimes I was rushing a bit and then, in the second half, Tim Krul made a great save. I am disappointed because I want to score, but first of all, I am happy for the team because we got the win.

“In that sense, it is good in that we have a lot of players who can score and create chances.

“Last week I scored, and this week I didn’t, but Leon [Trossard] and Shane [Duffy] both did when they came on. So it doesn’t really matter who scored, although obviously I do want to do so in the next game!”
