Youthful Albion take two records

The youthful side which took to the field for the Carabao Cup third round tie against Aston Villa caused a real buzz among the press box, but interestingly, it was not the youngest average age of an Albion starting line-up.

The line-up which faced Aston Villa set two club records.

The average age of the starting line-up to face Villa was 22 years and 35 days, but the side fielded against Stockport County in October 1993 takes that record at 21 years and 153 days.

But that doesn’t eliminate the Villa match from the record books. When Ryan Longman, Jack Spong and Romaric Yapi were introduced, the numbers decreased each time from 22 years and nine days, 21 years and 94 days, and finally, 21 years and 91 days.

So when Yapi replaced Shane Duffy, that statistic of 21 years and 91 days set a new record for the youngest average age in a first-class Albion match.

Another record set on the night concerned ten teenagers being included in a squad, with seven on the pitch once Duffy was substituted.

The previous record for the number of teenagers in an Albion squad was six, which was for two games in January 2007 – a league match against Millwall and a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy match with Bristol City.
