Burn heading to the Etihad with confidence

Dan Burn says Albion will head up to the Etihad Stadium with plenty of optimism and the belief they can get a result against the reigning Premier League champions.

The centre-back was part of the Wigan side that beat City in the 2013 FA Cup Final, and is now eager to cause another upset against them.

He said, “We have to go there with confidence and the hope that we can cause them problems. We’ve had a good start, which helps, and we need some points going into the international break to cement that.

“What separates City apart is the belief they’ve got, and they play the way most teams train. You see most teams do things in training that they won’t do on a matchday, whereas they’ve got the belief in themselves to go out and do those things.

“They’re one of the best teams in the world, but no-one is unbeatable and they haven’t won everything. It will take a lot of luck, but we’ll go there with the confidence that we can get something.

“We’ve had a lot of meetings with the manager, and he’s always engaging and instils a lot of confidence. He’s given us the belief that we can go there and do something, rather than just going there to stop them playing.”

The former Wigan man also spoke about the current competition for places in defence and says it is driving him on to perform even better.

“It’s the position we’ve got the most cover and quality. We’ve got six or seven centre-halves that have got the potential to come and play in this league.

“Webby [Adam Webster] will get his chance because he’s a very good centre-half and we’ve got Maty [Clarke] out on loan.

“That pushes me on every time I go out on a Saturday, and I know I’ve got to give it everything because there are people waiting in the wings.”

Burn reflected on Albion’s opening three games of the season in more detail, and says the mood within the camp is still high despite a frustrating 2-0 defeat to Southampton last time out.

“It’s encouraging. We perhaps could’ve picked up some points, but it’s been very good. We had a great performance against Watford and couldn’t have wished for a better start there.

“We were unfortunate against West Ham and could’ve come away with three points, but confidence is very high.

“Watford showed that the way we’re playing works and it gave us the confidence to attack other teams. It’s probably been my easiest way into the team as Shane [Duffy] and Lewis [Dunk] are international centre-halves, so it was hard to get them moved.

“It’s great for me to play in the back three, the players are enjoying it from their performances, and hopefully it continues.”
