The Irishman found the back of the net to fire the Seagulls ahead at the Memorial Stadium on a night where the side advanced to the third round, and he spoke about what he described as the ‘perfect evening’ after the victory.

He said, “It was a special night because it’s what I’ve been working for ever since I came over here.

“It’s the proudest moment of my career so far and it was made even better because my parents were there behind the goal as well.

“There’s no better scenario for me, thankfully they came over for tonight [Tuesday] and it’s all worked out.”

Potter's Rovers reaction

Tom Nichols drew the home side back on level terms soon after Connolly’s opener before Glenn Murray netted a last-gasp winner, and the striker looked back on a hard-fought victory.

“It wasn’t an easy win, we had to work really hard and I just had to play my part in helping us get a result,” he continued.

“They’re exactly the sort of games you expect when you come to places like this, they made it hard for us – but we deserved the win.

“I’m just glad to have got my full debut and now it’s about getting out there again. I feel like I’ve started the season well in Premier League 2 and that’s what you want as a striker.”

Connolly also spoke about the impact that fellow goalscorer Murray had on him in the game with the League One side, revealing the pair had been in conversation both before and throughout.

“Glenn pulled me through at the end because I was struggling as I hadn’t played that much senior football. To be out on the field with someone with his experience and knowledge is only going to benefit me.

“He was talking to me every few minutes and looked after me out there.  He had a slightly different role to me because he was out wide, and I was central, but he was encouraging me beforehand and to have that on the pitch with me is always a bonus.”
