Maupay's debut delight

Maupay together with Florin Andone formed an inspired double substitution just past the hour mark, with both men finding the scoresheet in an emphatic victory, and the Frenchman explained he couldn’t have wished for a better start.

He said, “It’s an incredible feeling today, I’ve made my debut in a win that includes a clean sheet and a goal for myself, so I’m really happy. I feel really proud and blessed. I’ve only been here for a few days but the boys have welcomed me very nicely.

“The boys worked really hard and we totally deserved the win.”

The Frenchman talked through his goal that put the result beyond any doubt at Vicarage Road, and explained how he and Andone studied the way they could make an impact on the game from the bench.

“I wasn’t nervous, I’m not someone who feels that pressure. I wanted to enjoy the moment, I could see the team were working really hard and so I knew I had to be ready when my time came.

“I needed to give everything I had, thankfully it worked. It was a great ball from Dunky [Lewis Dunk], and I said to Florin we could run in behind when we got on. That’s what we did and it was perfect.”

Attention now turns to the home match against West Ham United next Saturday, and Maupay highlighted the importance of staying grounded after a fantastic win.

“We have another tough match next weekend and we know we have to work hard again now because there is no easy game in this league. We have to keep focused, of course we will enjoy Saturday.

“The fans were great, they were really loud and sold out the away end. I can’t wait to see all of them at the Amex this weekend back on home soil, they are so important and give us energy and confidence.”
