Maupay: I'm ready for the Premier League

The 22-year-old found the back of the net 41 times during his two seasons at Brentford, but after switching red and white for blue and white, his focus is now on achieving success in the Premier League.

He said, “The Championship is so tough, you’re playing every three days, you don’t stop at Christmas, you play on the 1st January — it’s just physically and mentally so hard. But that’s what I needed.

“If you can prove you’re good in that league, I think you can be good in other leagues, because the schedule is less busy and you’ve got more time to work and rest.

“I scored a lot of goals at Brentford and I feel like I’ve been improving a lot over the last couple of years. But now, a club like Brighton is perfect for me. I’ll work really hard to improve.”

Ahead of today’s Premier League opener, the Frenchman continued to reflect gratefully on his time at previous club Brentford, where he worked on his attributes to prepare for life in England’s top flight one day.

“Joining Brentford was the best decision of my career — I needed to be at a club that trusted me, that put me on the pitch and played me.

“Brentford told me ‘you are young but we believe in you. We’ll give you time, you’ll improve as a player and we really believe that’. That’s what I needed.

“I’m the same player I was two years ago, but I’ve improved all my qualities and weaknesses.”
