The Seagulls kick off their Premier League campaign against Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday, and the head coach spoke about what he wants to see from his team this season, starting this weekend.
He said, “It’s really important that we build on the good work that has already been done here and the things that worked well, whilst adding our own bits and trying to improve.
“There are solid foundations here and I’ve come into a group with a lot of strong qualities.
“As always, we want to try and entertain the fans if we can, the challenge is big but we also know we need to get results. Ultimately, we want to encourage the players to be themselves and to be brave.”

The Hornets claimed a 2-0 win over Albion on the opening day of the 2018/19 campaign, and Potter spoke about the strengths of the opposition ahead of this year’s curtain-raiser.
“They did well last year, and we know it will be a challenge, but of course we’re confident because we’ve had a good pre-season which has improved as the time’s gone on,” he continued.
“We’re going to a well-organised outfit who play to their strengths very well, they were FA Cup finalists last season and were strong in the Premier League, so we’re under no illusions about how difficult it will be.
“We need to be ready for that. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited, but it isn’t about me. It’s about us as a team and as a club trying to get off to a good start and show what we’ve been working on.”
One new face who could take to the field in Hertfordshire is forward Neal Maupay, who joined the club from Brentford earlier this week.
The boss praised how the Frenchman has settled into life on the south coast so far, as well as providing a team news update ahead of the game with Javi Gracia’s side.
“Neal’s settling in really well and he’s been training for a couple of days with the group now.
“He’s showed his quality, it’s an easy group to come into because they’re good lads here, and that means all of the new lads have done the same since they arrived.
“We’ll see how he does between now and the weekend because he hasn’t had too much game time as of yet.
“Jose Izquierdo, Yves Bissouma and Ezequiel Schelotto are the three which will be unavailable this weekend. Apart from that we have a full squad to choose from.”
