The 24-year-old made the switch from Bristol City to the south coast at the weekend, and he said the head coach’s reputation for progressing young players drew him to the club.

He said, “I’m hoping the head coach can help me develop my game even further now, it’s one of the main reasons I came here.

“He places an emphasis on developing players and wants to help them get better, so I’m really looking forward to it.

“I remember Ostersunds vs Arsenal in Europe a few years ago, I didn’t realise how well he’d done until then, but it’s obviously a great story.”

Webster’s switch to the Albion made him the club’s third summer arrival of the transfer window, and he spoke about how happy he was to get the move over the line ahead of the new campaign.

“It’s something that had been going on for a few weeks, it felt like forever for me, but I’m delighted to finally be here now and can’t wait to get started,” he continued.

“It’s always been my ambition to play in the Premier League and it’s great that I finally have an opportunity to do that. I’ve come the long way up from League Two, but I’m buzzing and cannot wait to get going.

“Every game stands out to me when you look down our fixtures, it hasn’t really sunk in yet but I’m sure it will.

“You always have to believe in yourself and trust that things will work out, thankfully they have and it’s about me having a good season here.”

The defender earned plenty of praise for his performances for Lee Johnson’s men last season, becoming renowned for his calmness and composure on the ball at the back and he says that it’s a trait he’s added to his game over the course of his career.

“The head coach’s style matches mine. I like to bring the ball out from the back and begin the attacks for the team.

“It’s something I’ve got better at over the years and it fits right into what the head coach wants here, so it’s really exciting.

“My previous managers have all been big in my development – we played a lot of good football last year and that suited me and probably brought out some of my best form.

“The division might allow me to be able to do that more because the Championship is quite relentless week to week, hopefully it does suit me more.”
