The 22-year-old joined the Rams on a season-long loan deal earlier today following his permanent switch to Albion last month, and is now focused on settling in quickly at Pride Park.

He said, “It all came about over the last few days. I went in for training at Brighton in the morning, and then came up to Derby after that.

“I was really settled at Portsmouth and then it’s been a couple of moves in quick succession, but that’s the way football works.

“The idea behind it is for me to play regular football in the Championship, but I’ve got to work hard, buy into what the manager wants to do, and see how it goes.

“I’ve played a couple of 90 minutes and a few 45-minute games at Brighton, so I feel good and am raring to go.”

Clarke is eager to get started under highly-regarded coach Phillip Cocu, and cannot wait for the Rams’ season opener away at Huddersfield Town on Monday.

“You’ve got to have massive respect for people like that," he continued.

“When I arrived here, you can see how highly regarded he is after not being here that long. I’m excited and looking forward to working with him.

“I’m straight into it now, and that’s what I want. Pre-season is over and we’re looking to start the real competition.”

The defender also reflected warmly on his time at Portsmouth before making his two subsequent summer moves, and is backing his former club to make another promotion challenge this coming season.

“I loved it from the first minute, and there was a gradual progression for me at the club. It worked out very well and I have fond memories from my time there.

“In League Two, the crowds we got compared to the teams we used to go to was staggering really. It’s a club that’s on the way up, and I’m sure they will be up there again this season.”
