Matt Clarke and Leandro Trossard arrived from Portsmouth and KRC Genk respectively, and the boss spoke about the importance of bringing the right personalities into the team.

He said, “It’s always important to know about someone’s personality away from the field, because that’s just as important as what they can do on it.

“It’s about characters and they’re human-beings first, and footballers second. It’s therefore important that we bring in the right people who are proud to play for Brighton at an exciting time in their career.

“Everyone’s different but you have to consider the person you’re bringing in for the harmony of the group and the development of the team.”

Potter also spoke about the significance of the older players in the dressing room and the part they have to play during the upcoming season.

“The senior players in the changing room are important too, but you need a mix of personalities,” he continued.

“It’s about their different characters and the attributes they can bring. We have lots of experienced players who have been here a while and understand both the club and the culture that’s been built here.

“This club has been on a positive rise, which we want to build on and use that as well as we can. We’re just looking to improve and build on the positive foundations that are already in place here.

“It’s not easy in this division and it sounds easy, but that’s the challenge in the most competitive league in the world.

“We have to take each day as it comes and not worry too much about what might or might not happen between now and the end of the season.”
