The 18-year-old scored on his debut for the club in a 1-0 win over Crawley Town on Friday evening and spoke about his choice to head south.

He said, “The move here was an easy decision because I feel as though I’m now at a stage of my career where I have to push on.

“I felt a bit stuck playing at under-23 level, but all credit to Manchester City for everything they taught me both on and off the field, and I would really like to thank them.

“I’d been there since I was 14 and played with top players every single day.”

The England midfielder went on to reflect on his time at his former employers, as well as previewing life under new boss Graham Potter.

“They have so many quality and world-class players, it’s hard but you can’t blame them because they’re competing for trophies and they want to win the title every year,” he continued.

“If I was the manager, I’d probably do the same, but all credit to them because they’ve done so well in recent years.

“I came here because I saw an opportunity to progress and get better. The head coach has a reputation of playing and developing young players like myself, so I’m happy with my choice and hope it goes well.”
