Burn happy with defensive competition

Brighton & Hove Albion defender Dan Burn believes the team are well endowed in the heart of defence ahead of the club’s third season in the Premier League.

Head coach Graham Potter added Matt Clarke to his defensive options last month, joining Burn, Lewis Dunk, Shane Duffy and Leon Balogun, as the Seagulls shape up for the 2019/20 campaign.

Burn spent the past week training in Austria with Clarke, Dunk and Duffy, while Balogun has been away at the African Cup of Nations, and the 27-year-old has been impressed by the quality Clarke has added to the mix.

He said, “There’s more competition for places now Matt Clarke has come in, and he’s a left-footer as well.

“I played against Matt when we played for Wigan and Portsmouth in League One and he was very good as a young lad coming into the game.

“He’s played a lot of games for his age and is a very cultured player. I’ve been impressed by what I’ve seen so far.

“It’s a position that we’re very healthy in, and we’ve got lots of options if anything does happen to players, such as injuries and suspensions.”

Burn was restricted to three appearances in the Emirates FA Cup last season, but the defender had little to complain about after the impressive form delivered by two of his team-mates.

“Last season Lewis and Shane were class, I couldn’t fault them at all. Dunk is an England international and Duffy plays for Ireland and got Player of the Season — they’re very good players.

“It feels like a clean slate this season — I don’t feel as if I’m coming in to back those lads up. I want to give them a good go and push them on. At the very least, if I push them on to be better players, then I’d be happy with that.

“I want to make sure I give everything that I’ve got and have no regrets, so if it does work out or doesn’t work out, I can’t have any complaints.”

The defender is currently enjoying his first pre-season with the Seagulls, after joining from Wigan last year and spending the opening half of the 2018/19 campaign at the DW Stadium.

“I came down for a week once I’d signed, before I went back to Wigan,” he continued. “We quickly sorted a place to live down here, so we’ve been able to settle in very well.

“We love life down here, it’s our first summer in Brighton and we’re getting down the beach whenever we can.

“It’s miles away from home, but we’ve always got family coming down to visit. It’s a great place to live and I’m really enjoying my time here.”
