Merricks: We Match United’s Ambition

By Adam Tighe • 08 January 2019

Brighton & Hove Albion women's assistant manager Amy Merricks believes the club is just as impressive as Manchester United, despite the prestige that comes with the Red Devils’ name.

Albion were drawn at home to United’s newly formed women’s side in the SSE Women's FA Cup, and Merricks feels the Seagulls have an infrastructure that more than matches the Manchester club.

She said, “The history that Man United bring is huge as they are the biggest club in the world, but the set-up we have here is just as good, if not better.

“The ambition of the board and the club, and what they are doing to support the women’s side here is amazing.

“So yes, they have all the history, but I put us up there with them in terms of vision and our ambition is just as great as theirs.”

Casey Stoney’s United currently sit top of the Women’s Championship, with nine wins from 11 games, and Merricks expects the red side of Manchester to achieve promotion to the WSL.

“United are obviously a really strong side. They train full time and they have already beaten the likes of Everton and Liverpool this season.

“It will be a tough game, but a really good opportunity to see what they are about. They are probably going to get promoted, so if we stay up it gives us a chance to have a look at what we may expect next season and what kind of set-up they have got."
