Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Sophie Harris was left frustrated by the scoreline in the Seagulls’ 7-1 FA Continental Tyres Cup defeat to Manchester City yesterday.
Harris deputised for regular goalkeeper Marie Hourihan, and felt that tiredness had got the better of the team in the latter stages.
She said, “I’m glad to get the opportunity to showcase what I am about. Hopefully, I will get more but I was disappointed by the scoreline. Against a team like Manchester City you know they are going to get chances but I think in the last ten minutes we were very tired and I think they took advantage of that.
“They had good quality in and around goal. Every chance they got they tried to get an advantage over us and they play at a good pace. For a good 60 minutes we competed with them and made it difficult and left them frustrated.”
Harris was in the thick of the action throughout the match, and City could have had more goals had she not pulled of a variety of good saves in the first-half, denying Nikita Parris on a couple of occasions.
“Those saves were good. When you come into a game like Manchester City you know what you are going to need to make saves, but overall I’m frustrated by the goals.
“We go again, I’ll take the good points from the match and I’ll look at the things I need to work on in training and hopefully go again in the important game on Sunday.”
The summer recruit also touched on some positives the team could take from the match and said that the focus was now on the league matches ahead, starting with Everton on Sunday.
“Our shape at times was good and getting the goal were plus points. At times we identified their weaknesses and exploited them.
“We were happy to reach this quarter-final but now it’s all about the league and getting the three points against Everton, and if we put the positives from today and last Sunday against Liverpool I’m sure we’ll get a good result.”
