Merricks: It's About Pushing A Bit Further

By Jake Ketley • 13 January 2019

Brighton & Hove Albion women’s first-team assistant manager Amy Merricks has called on the team to do the basics well in today’s FA Women’s Super League match against Everton.

Merricks saw positives from both matches the team have played in 2019, and wants the team to push on further to gain more points that their performances have deserved.

She said, “We performed really well against Liverpool and executed the game plan really well. We competed really well for the 75 to 80 minutes against Manchester City on Thursday, and managed to limit their opportunities for that time period.

“There are definitely positives to take from both games, and I know that the girls will be looking forward to this one.

“The players know that we have performed well against most teams, especially the teams around us, and have deserved more from those games.

“It is now about making sure we push that little bit harder to get the best results. It’s not that the performances before the Christmas break have been bad, it’s just about pushing that little bit further to get the goals in the matches, the results, and then the points on the board.”

Albion head into the match with only a three-day period between matches, after facing Manchester City in the Continental Tyres League Cup quarter-final, whereas Everton have had a clear week, but Merricks insists this will not be an issue for her side.

“It’s part of being a full-time professional football player. The girls understand how to recover and prepare in such a short space of time, but of course, it is a challenge.

“It requires every single player in the squad to play a part, which they have been doing so far really well. We were in the classroom the morning after the City match making sure that we were doing our revision on Everton and making sure we are ready to go.

“It will be a really tough game and they will come to play us wanting to get three points. They are never easy to play against and if anything it will be an exciting game as both teams will go for it.

“It is important that we work hard for each other and do the basics really well consistently for the whole game.”

Tickets will be available to purchase on the gate at The People’s Pension Stadium at the turnstiles. There are priced at £10 for adults and £4 for under-10s.
