Powell Rues Missed Chances

By Jake Ketley • 13 March 2019

Brighton & Hove Albion women’s first-team manager Hope Powell was disappointed with her side’s 1-1 draw against Yeovil Town this evening, and admitted she saw the match as two points lost.

Victoria Williams gave Albion the lead, and the team had multiple chances to extend their lead before Yeovil equalised, and Powell was unhappy that the players were unable to convert them.

She said, “I see it as two points dropped, but that being said I’m glad we didn’t lose the game. I’m disappointed that we didn’t score more goals from the number of chances we created.

“I think we created enough to go on and win the game, but credit must go to Yeovil for coming back the way they did; they made it difficult.”

Powell also not only believed her side should have won, but they should have done so by a good margin, but she took time to find the positives in the performance.

“It’s all about the composure in front of goal. We don’t necessarily need to break the back of the net with our shots, it’s better to pass the ball into the corners, and that is something we didn’t do today.

“It was evident for everybody that watched today that with those opportunities we should have won by a decent margin. But Yeovil were clinical and they dug in, so for them they will see it as a point gained.

“The positives we can take are: the point we gained, the number of chances we created and the fact that we battled until the end. That being said, it felt like we lost. The girls are somewhat disheartened because we knew that on the day we deserved to win it.

“But that’s the beauty of the game, if you don’t take your chances then you don’t win the match.”

Powell then looked ahead to the next FA Women’s Super League match against Reading, which is over one month away, and saw it as an opportunity to regroup and get the players into peak condition.

“We’re expecting another tough game. We played them earlier in the season and they are a very technical side. They have many seasoned internationals past and present, so it is going to be difficult for us but this league is tough.

“We have a month to get the players fit, healthy and ready to go again. It’s a long time so it means we can get a lot of stuff done.”
