Albion Pledge Support Behind #whatif Campaign

By James Hilsum • 21 May 2019

Brighton & Hove Albion are delighted to pledge their support to Women in Football’s #WhatIf campaign.

The #WhatIf campaign was launched 12 months ago to change the landscape for women involved in football, and Albion are the latest football club to show their support.

The campaign has gained backing from a number of different companies and individuals, who have all committed to specific pledges to improve the opportunities for women working within the football industry.

In a suggested pledge menu for football clubs, Albion have already met a number of those listed, and have reiterated their commitment to developing women’s and girls’ football by agreeing to the following.

• We increase our funding of our women’s and girls’ teams?
• We continue to play one women’s team game per season at the main stadium?
• We showcase the fantastic work done by women at our club across our communications channels?

Albion chief executive and deputy chairman, Paul Barber, along with women’s chair and director, Michelle Walder, attended the event.

Michelle Walder, said, “We are delighted to give our support to this campaign, which is another brilliant way of empowering women within football.

“This campaign is gathering momentum, and fits in well with all the tremendous equality work that the club has been undertaking within the past 12 months, and remains committed to going forwards.

“It was brilliant to attend the event to mark 12 months of the campaign. There were a number of fantastic new commitments being showcased by many different organisations and individuals, and we can all learn from and support one another.”

Jane Purdon, Women in Football CEO, added, "This is simply amazing. We are thrilled that Brighton have come on board and made three fantastic pledges that are guaranteed to make a difference to girls and women both playing football and working for the club.

"Providing opportunities and improving visibility are key - and Brighton have come up trumps on both."
