Goldson Heading In The Right Direction

Brighton & Hove Albion defender Connor Goldson expressed his delight at scoring his third goal for the club - a nice moment for the 25-year-old who also commented on his thankfulness to still be playing the game.

Goldson made his seventh appearance of the season, following his return from heart surgery, and the centre-back headed into the top corner to double Albion’s advantage against Coventry City in their 3-1 victory yesterday.

He said, “After the first corner, I felt I had a chance of scoring, because I got away from my marker and he then blocked the header.

“I just wanted to attack the next one, and after everything I’ve been through, it’s obviously great to be back playing and the goal tops it off.

“There’s been a few games now where I’ve been playing and I said to my girlfriend that I’d do the celebration for her - luckily she was here today to see it.

“I’m not a person to moan. I’m lucky because I was 24 when I was diagnosed, I had the treatment and I’m fortunate that I was able to play again.

“There are people that aren’t as fortunate as me. I’m able to play and that’s all I want to do, just keep playing and hopefully impress.”

The Sky Blues pulled a goal back through Jonson Clarke-Harris, after Jurgen Locadia and Leonardo Ulloa had also hit the back of the net for the Seagulls - and Goldson gave credit to Albion’s opponents.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game. We’ve all been an underdog before and know what it’s like to go to a Premier League club and play a big opponent.

“To be fair, they put on a good show and should be very proud of themselves. It was a tough game, particularly the second half - we knew that when we got one, we’d need to get two and three.

“It would have been a nervous last 15 or 20 minutes if it was only 2-0 when they scored.”

Albion’s victory secured their place in the last eight of the Emirates FA Cup, and Goldson spoke about the eagerness across the playing squad to play football and progress further in the competition.

“For every single player in the team, they’ve got points to prove. Some people aren’t playing every week, some people have just been signed and some people are in and out.

“We’ve all got points to prove and that’s what has taken us to this stage. We want to win every game of football and show that we can all play in the first team - and we’re doing that.”
