Ray Wilkins 1956-2018

By James Hilsum • 04 April 2018

Everyone at Brighton & Hove Albion is deeply saddened to hear news of the passing of former England international midfielder, Ray Wilkins, aged 61.

Ray, the brother of former Albion player and manager Dean Wilkins, scored a spectacular goal for Manchester United in the 2-2 draw with Brighton in the FA Cup Final, before featuring in their 4-0 replay victory. He also won the Scottish league title with Rangers six years later in a glittering playing career.

He featured for the likes of Chelsea, AC Milan and Paris St-Germain too, and earned 84 caps for England, captaining his country on ten occasions.

Following his retirement, Ray also had spells as manager of QPR, Fulham and the Jordan national team, as well as two separate roles as Chelsea assistant coach from 1998 to 2000 and in 2008 to 2010, when he worked alongside Guus Hiddink and Carlo Ancelotti.

Ray had success as a TV and radio pundit as well, commentating on a number of high-profile matches for Sky Sports.

Our thoughts go out to Ray's family and friends, including his brother Dean, at this difficult time.
