Stats Amazing: The Numbers Behind The Season

By Alex Stedman • 18 May 2018

Brighton & Hove Albion secured top flight status for next season after reaching the 40-point mark against Manchester United on Friday 4th May.

Chris Hughton’s side ended the campaign in 15th position, and below we take a look at some of the numbers behind a memorable first season in the Premier League.

The exploits of the central defensive partnership of Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy this season haven’t gone unnoticed, with the former being touted with the possibility of an England call-up throughout the season.

Both of the pair’s defensive stats make good reading – but those of Duffy are especially impressive.

The Irishman tops the charts in the division for the number of blocks (59), clearances (327), and headed clearances (237). Dunk occupies second position in the first table (58) and the duo have made a combined 550 clearances over the course of the campaign as Hughton’s men kept a total of 10 clean sheets.

Another to earn plenty of plaudits this season has been midfielder Pascal Gross – who picked up the club’s Player of the Season award back in April - he scored seven goals and notched eight assists, and in doing so was directly involved in 45% of Albion’s goals for the campaign.

Glenn Murray topped the goalscoring charts as he found the net 12 times, as the forward scored in five consecutive home matches at the Amex Stadium between January and March, whilst Dunk and Maty Ryan played every minute of the league campaign.

Dale Stephens made 1,757 passes from August to May as he topped the passing charts, and he also made 104 tackles – which was 31 more than second placed midfielder partner Davy Propper.

Finally, five players were involved in all nine of the side’s wins over the course of the season – three Englishman in Solly March, Stephens and Dunk, as well as Ryan, Gross, Propper and Anthony Knockaert.
