Button Relishing Competition For Places

By Alex Stedman • 16 July 2018

Brighton & Hove Albion’s new goalkeeper David Button is relishing the competition for places on the south coast after completing his move from Fulham.

The 29-year-old becomes the second first-team goalkeeper to sign for the club this summer following the arrival of Jason Steele last month, and he insists that he will fight for a place in the team.

He said, “There’s a lot of competition in my position and I want to be a part of that.

“It’s something that’s brilliant as a player and at this level it’s normal – they’re [Maty Ryan and Jason Steele] both great goalkeepers and I’m looking forward to working with them and helping us all improve.

“Training will be a good chance to get to know the lads straight away. I’m told it’s a great bunch.”

Button joins Albion on three-year deal and can’t wait to start preparing for the new Premier League campaign with Chris Hughton’s side, and he was full of praise for the team’s exploits last season.

“I couldn’t be happier to be here. I’m delighted and looking forward to the season ahead.

“I saw how well the team did last season during their first year in the Premier League and every time I saw them I was really impressed.

“I thought the whole side did really well whenever I saw them, and a lot of players had good seasons.”

The goalkeeper spoke highly of the club’s facilities and fans, as well as revealing that he’d also previously worked with the club’s goalkeeping coach, Ben Roberts.

“It’s a lovely stadium and I’ve played against the club a lot of times in the past.

“I’ve always been impressed whenever I’ve come to the ground, and the facilities and supporters are great too, so I’m looking forward to being on the right side of that now.

“I’ve worked with Ben Roberts before at Charlton Athletic and I know what he’s about – he’s one of the best coaches in the country and I’m glad to be back with him here.”
