Hughton Happy With Double-header

By Kieran Cleeves • 24 July 2018

Brighton & Hove Albion manager Chris Hughton was pleased to provide his players with two pre-season matches today, as the Seagulls shared 1-1 draws with Portsmouth and Charlton Athletic.

Tomer Hemed drew Albion level against Pompey in the morning, before a goal from Pascal Gross was cancelled out at The Valley - and Hughton felt it was another good opportunity to prepare for the upcoming season.

He said, “It was a very good workout against a good side [Charlton]. We’ve had two games today and this was our opportunity to give a second group of players more minutes on the pitch.

“What we got was what we expected - tough games against sides that are one week closer to the start of their division. Hopefully it was a worthwhile exercise for both teams.”

The Albion boss also commented on the current condition of his first-team squad, after the Seagulls brought in seven new faces over the summer months.

“I’m happy with the squad and if we finish with the squad that we’ve got now, then it’s a squad that I’m happy to go into the season with.

“We want to try and get as good a squad as we can. We know the numbers that we want and it’s generally about having two players in each position.

“We’ll continue to try and develop the squad as much as we can in the time period we have.”

Summer signings David Button, Leon Balogun and Bernardo all featured at The Valley, and Hughton praised all three for their performances, before assessing the fitness of Shane Duffy and Jurgen Locadia.

“All three of them did well and they’ve also settled in very well - Certainly with Leon Balogun who’s an experienced player and speaks very good English, as does Bernardo.

“Bernardo is perhaps at the other side of the age group - 23 years of age and there’s a lot to come from him.

“Duffy is fine, he played in the game this morning. The good news with Locadia is that he’s far better than what he could have been.

“He felt his groin at the weekend but it’s very minor. We expect him back within the next couple of weeks.”
