Williams: We'll Have The Right Mentality

By James Hilsum • 16 September 2018

Brighton & Hove Albion defender Victoria Williams says the team will go into today’s Continental League Cup match against London Bees with the right mentality.

Albion head into their third match of the group stages, and Williams admits lessons can be learned from the penalty shootout defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in their last match in the competition.

She said, “London Bees are an established club in what was WSL2 and now the Championship, so we expect another tough test.

“They’re a Championship side playing against a Super League team, so they will want to perform even more. We’re going to have to prepare well, but we won’t go into it with the wrong mentality.

“It’s just about taking extra care because what we were disappointed with most against Tottenham was there were too many unforced errors. People will call them disappointing results, but valuable lessons will be learned from both games.”

The centre-back scored her first goal for the club in that match against Tottenham, and explained the need for all players to contribute at both ends of the pitch.

“It’s great to score and if I can do that or make a goalline challenge to get us over the line, then I will.

“It’s nice to get off the mark, and it’s important to get goals from all over the pitch. I’m not saying that a defender should score every week, but we all have a responsibility to get the team over the line, whether that’s scoring or stopping it from going in the other end.”

The former Sunderland defender also reflected on last week’s 1-0 defeat to Bristol City in their FA Women’s Super League opener, and feels there’s plenty to build on for the rest of the season.

“We weren’t that bad and felt we controlled large periods of the game. Possibly it was just the quality of our decision making, and it wasn’t due to a lack of opportunities.

“It was disappointing not to get something from the game, because I felt we deserved at least a point. I’m not overly concerned though, because I feel we’re going in the right direction.

“This club has just come up into this league and success isn’t going to happen overnight.”
